Kitschy decorations brighten up the walls of New York Style Eats.
If you’ve looked forever for a restaurant that’s versatile enough to enjoy a meal alone, catch up with old friends or take your love interest out on a casual date, you don’t have to look very far; New York Style Eats is located right in the heart of Sunnyside, half a block from the 7 train and a stone’s throw from Astoria, Long Island City and Woodside.

The moment I set foot in this cozy establishment, I forgot it was on Queens Boulevard, one of the busiest roads in the borough. The restaurant looks like your average diner on the outside, but the unique décor of the interior gives it a rustic café look and feel. The walls are alive with fun three-dimensional knick knacks, quirky little paintings and colorful murals. All this is pulled off artfully without being the least bit tacky; somehow it just all works.

NYSE offers something for everyone: pasta, burgers, wraps, breakfast platters, fish and a variety of Greek, Italian and American specialties. Everything will satisfy, but a safe bet is the vegetarian-friendly New York Scrambler, a fluffy omelette with broccoli, mushrooms, asparagus, tomatoes, onions and cheese. The Manhattan Sandwich, a chicken cutlet topped with fresh mozzarella and roasted peppers on a hero, is also a customer favorite.

All orders are prepared in an open kitchen in plain sight, so you don’t have to worry about any funny business going on around your food. I was in the mood for breakfast, so I had the New York Scrambler, pancakes, waffles and a bagel and lox platter. The hearty portions arrived hot and the ingredients tasted fresh, to my relief, because diner fare is usually hit or miss. It was every bit as good as eating a hot, home-cooked meal—probably better, in my case, since I’m not much of a cook. To sweeten the deal, nothing on the menu costs more than $15.

This place is kitschy and cool, not at all fussy or pretentious. Service is quick and the staff is attentive without being annoying.

The next time you’re in the area watching a movie at Sunnyside Center Cinema or browsing the local mom-and-pop shops, stop in for a meal and let NYSE show you why it calls itself the “Home of Great Food.”

New York Style Eats is located at 45-02 Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside, Queens. This diner for the digital age also takes telephone and Internet orders. For more information or to place an online order, visit
