But in New York City, political observers are already looking ahead to the primary election in 2021. With the mayor, comptroller and the majority of the City Council term-limited out of office, this election cycle will surely determine the future of the Big Apple for the next decade.
With Bill de Blasio departing from Gracie Mansion, a new slate of candidates is vying to be his successor. Last week, Comptroller Scott Stringer made his candidacy official, launching his bid in his home neighborhood in upper Manhattan.
He is expected to compete with Borough President Eric Adams, former OMB director and city housing commissioner Shaun Donovan, former city Veterans Affairs commissioner Loree Sutton and former de Blasio counsel and CCRB chair Maya Wiley, among other candidates.
City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, who was expected to be a top-tier candidate for mayor in 2021, is reportedly reassessing his bid after tough budget negotiations.
Another likely new entrant into the race is former Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia, who gave her two-week notice to City Hall while also bashing the mayor’s record on her way out. Garcia played many roles in the de Blasio administration, from food czar during the pandemic to interim head of NYCHA.
A handful of veteran politicians are running for comptroller, including Queens Assemblyman David Weprin and Brooklyn Councilman Brad Lander. The citywide office is seen as a check on the mayor and a stepping stone for higher office.
Hundreds more are competing for a shot at 35 open City Council seats, all vacated by current representatives. The most recent candidate to throw their hat in the ring is Tiffany Caban, who narrowly lost to Melinda Katz for Queens district attorney last year. Caban will enter an already crowded field of candidates to represent District 22 in western Queens.
With the pandemic still ongoing, and the Democratic primary less than a year away, candidates will have to come up with new and innovative ways to campaign and reach the voters.
While we must all vote in the presidential election this year, keep a close eye on the 2021 city elections coming up soon.
