Madison Square Garden Theater will host the two Brooklynites as they do battle for Hardy’s WBO Featherweight championship.
Hardy won the title in a bout with Shelly Vincent in the same Theater on October 27, which came over two years after their previous bout in Coney Island’s Amphitheater, which Serrano attended in support of Hardy.
“Heather Hardy broke down the door for females to fight at the Barclays, and I ran right through those doors,” Serrano told BQE Media almost three years ago, recognizing the impact Hardy had in women’s boxing.
Barclays Center has become a hotbed for boxing, showcasing Hardy and Serrano a combined 14 times.
This past week, the former sparring partners met for the first time before their bout at MSG for media obligations in anticipation of the potential Fight of the Year candidate, regardless of gender.
“It’s one of those fights where one mistake could cost you the whole fight,” Hardy said.
The champion also says Serrano, a seven-division world champion, was the mandatory challenger she had to face to keep the WBO Title.
Although that would appear to raise tension levels for the ensuing bout, their pre-fight media stare down right outside of Madison Square Garden this past Tuesday would suggest otherwise.
As they two posed face-to-face for their photo op in front of the World’s Most Famous Arena, a few seconds in they began to laugh.
“It’s awkward,” Hardy explained. “We stare at each other for minutes straight. It’s like we’re getting married. Plus, Amanda and I are all business.”
Serrano feels exactly the same: It’s all business.
“It’s going to be a good fight, neither of us know how to step back,” she said. “It’s going to be a barnburner.”
The September 13th fight is scheduled to take place on a card that also includes a main event bout between undefeated rising star Devin Haney (22-0, 14 KOs) and Zaur Abdullaev (11-0, 7 KOs), along with a featured World Super Bantamweight championship bout between WBA and IBF Champion Daniel Roman (27-2, 10 KOs) and Murodjon Akhmadaliev (6-0, 5 KOs).
