Borough President Melinda Katz has picked up a big supporter in her bid for Queens district attorney, or at least one that has the potential to tap into some donors with deep pockets.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that he is backing Katz in the hotly contested race. And while it’s great for her that she has the governor’s support, more importantly he is hosting a June 10th fundraiser for Katz in Manhattan.

The crowded field for the June 23rd primary includes Katz, Greg Lasak, a former top aide to District Attorney Richard Brown, attorneys Jose Nieves and Betty Lugo, Councilman Rory Lancman, and Mina Malik, the former director of the Civilian Complaint Review Board.

There is also one other person on the ballot, public defender Tiffany Caban. Caban is endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America and the Working Families Party, but that supports pales in comparison to the nod she received from freshman congresswoman and D.C. superstar Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Getting the backing of AOC was seen as a major boost to Caban’s campaign, and now many insiders see this as a three-way race between Katz, Lasak and Caban.

And money is playing a big part in the race, which makes Cuomo’s fundraiser for Katz important. Candidates have collectively raised $2.5 million, with Lasak leading the pack in both donations and spending at $691,000 and $720,000, respectively.
