In my previous article, I mentioned that the last few weeks were going to be a very busy time in Woodhaven.

On May 15, we had a special meeting with a representative from the U.S. Census Bureau. She spoke about great job opportunities for Census 2020. If you did not attend the meeting, the GWDC has that information at our office. Just call and we will gladly give you the packet.

Members of the GWDC attended a free Mets game on May 20, appearing on the scoreboard a few times that evening. Thank you to the Mets for the 200 tickets and a winning night!

The GWDC is in the process of trying to secure another batch of free tickets for a game this summer, and we will keep you posted.

On May 23, GWDC held our Memorial Day Observance. This was a nice opportunity to honor the veterans of past and present wars. There were several other events that took place that week sponsored by various groups, and I hope you got to go to some of them.

On June 1, the WBID and DOT partnered for Weekend Walks on Jamaica Avenue. Community organizations were there to hand our information and answer questions, along with businesses handing out food samples and plenty of giveaways.

The GWDC table had a summer craft activity for the children. We were very busy that day, but it was fun. The children especially enjoyed “Margie’s Area” with the chalk, hula hoops, bubbles and so much more.

The rides and inflatables were packed, and for the adults a band played a variety of music and tables and chairs were provided to enjoy the atmosphere. The community of Woodhaven was out that day.

That brings to mind the GWDC street fair, which will be on October 13 from noon to 6 p.m. on Jamaica Avenue. I am already getting phone calls and emails and a few vendors, too. If you wish to become a vendor or just need info about this year’s fair, it is never too early to call or email us.

On Thursday June 20, the GWDC is hosting a “Price is Right” fundraiser at Woodhaven Manor from 7 to 10 p.m. We will be trying to stage the event just like the real show, but if we can’t do that exactly, at least we will win prizes and have fun.

Tickets are priced at $25, which includes admission to the event along with a light meal, coffee and dessert. We will have a limited number of tickets for this event, so if you are interested call our office at (718) 805-0202.

I would like to end this article by saying an early Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there.  Mother’s Day seems to get most of the attention, there is another half to that equation.

My father has long passed, and recently we lost two fathers who are near and dear to our family. My husband Jim last spring, and at the beginning of this year my brother-in-law Richie. And I can’t forget to mention another brother-in-law of mine, John, who also passed many years ago.

They all died too young, every one before retirement age. Soas I have stated before with the moms, cherish your dads while they are still here, because you never know when they will be taken from you.

I hope you all enjoy the almost-summer weather until I write again in July.
