Dear Editor,

Much thanks for publishing my letter "Is Cuomo High" in the February 5th issue.

Interestingly, I grew up in the era of the hippies when cannabis, LSD, et al., were the sacred drugs, but never, fortunately, jumped on that bandwagon; although, I did wear bell-bottom pants, and grew long pork chop side burns.

I loved the idealism of the time, but it was utopian with no concrete political centralism. The same problem surfaced with the Occupy Wall Street movement: a lack of definitive ideology and political centralism.

Limited socialist agendas may be productive, socially and economically, and implemented democratically. But radical socialist initiatives demand party centralism as Lenin stated.

The Soviets as democratic representatives succumbed to the power of the Communist Party.

The hippies failed because of their drug subculture and devastating social consequences. Legalizing marijuana will just falsely vindicate a dark chapter in modern American history.

Sincerely,

Joseph N. Manago
