It is wishful thinking that the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) would pay for up to 50 percent of the $2.8 billion cost of the BQX.
Mayor Bill de Blasio, Borough President Melinda Katz, the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and Friends of the BQX all need to wake up and smell the coffee.
Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen claimed that the FTA New Starts program should help fund it because it is a "cool urban project" hardly justifies financial assistance. De Blasio later confirmed he is now counting on over $1 billion in federal funding.
In 2015, Friends of the BQX claimed it could be built for $1.7 billion. In 2016, the EDC said $2.5 billion. Today, the estimated cost is $2.8 billion. How many more billions might it cost upon completion?
Don't count on riding the BQX any time soon. Instead, the city should try running limited-stop bus service on the same route.
