The Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society is hosting a special “Pay One Price Party” at the Forest Park Carousel on Friday, June 22, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. In case of rain, it will be moved to June 29.

Bring your kids to the Carousel that night, and for $10 they’ll get a wristband that will give them unlimited rides on the landmarked Carousel, the Woodhaven Express Train Ride, and the wildly popular Frog Hopper, which debuted last year to great acclaim.

There will also be a magic show that kids will go crazy over, and a host of raffle prizes geared towards kids. It’ll be a great night for the whole family, one they’ll remember for many years to come.

And thanks to the generosity of the Forest Park Carousel, all proceeds from the tickets will go to the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society to support the various community projects they are involved with right now.

For instance, there’s been art classes for seniors as well as art programs for students in local schools, as well as the ongoing restoration of the Wyckoff-Snedeker Cemetery.

All of the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society’s events are free and open to the public, including a few upcoming walking tours of Woodhaven.

It is through the generosity and kindness of residents and friends like the Forest Park Carousel that the society thrives and survives, and we hope you’ll come out to the Carousel on June 22 to support it.

The Forest Park Carousel is the perfect place for the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society to host a party. For over a century, the carousel in Forest Park has been part of the tradition of growing up in Woodhaven.

In many families, several generations have fond memories of riding on the carousel as children, and have passed along that tradition by taking their own children or grandchildren for their first ride.

Historically, the Forest Park Carousel is particularly notable, as it was the handiwork of the legendary master carver Daniel Muller. Muller came to the United States from Germany as a child in the 1880s and as a young man he and his brother worked for Gustav Dentzel, a renowned carousel builder in his own right.

Dentzel’s father built carousels back in Germany dating back to the mid-18th century. Muller took advantage of the opportunity to learn all of these old-world skills from Dentzel, and blended it with his own realistic style to carve out a name for himself.

In 1903, the D.C. Muller and Bro. Company was founded.

Muller’s carvings were notable for being very beautiful and realistic. In some cases the carvings were militaristic, with horses sporting bugles, swords and canteens.

Over 14 years, D.C. Muller and Bro. created over a dozen carousels but, sadly, today only two remain: one in Cedar Point, Ohio, and ours right here in Forest Park.

The Forest Park Carousel is a terrific piece of hand-carved art, and we are very grateful to the operators of the ride for generously offering the space to the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society for this fundraiser.

Since they took over the Carousel six years ago, the operators have not only been wonderful caretakers of this landmark, they have been good partners with our community.

And once summer is here, the Forest Park Carousel will be open seven days a week. There are free clown and magic shows scheduled every Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m.

They have also added a ring toss game and a basketball shootout, and later this summer we may see the unveiling of a very special addition, an antique Ferris Wheel.

Suddenly, our Forest Park Carousel has turned into a mini-amusement park with lots of fun things for the family to do. In fact, the entire site has been rebranded The Forest Park Carousel Amusement Village, and the name truly fits!

We hope you have a great summer and hope you decide to kick it off by bringing the family to the Forest Park Carousel for the Pay One Price Party.
