Perennial New York State power Long Island Lutheran High School opened and closed the event with their highly regarded boys and girls programs, with games featuring the boys’ teams from Thomas Edison High School of Queens and South Shore High School of Brooklyn sandwiched in between.
In the duel between the two PSAL schools, Thomas Edison came up short in a battle against Bronx-based Eagle Academy, while a very talented South Shore squad nearly knocked off St. Mary’s of New Jersey.
LuHi’s boys team wrapped up the event by blowing out Sacred Heart High School of Connecticut, led by Donatas Kupsas, a standout of the Queens-based AAU program New York Jayhawks.
Meanwhile, Christ the King High School hosted a bevy of talented players and teams at the fourth annual Apparel Challenge.
The day began with perhaps the two best girls’ teams in New York City, the Christ the King Royals and South Shore Vikings, squaring off. King knocked off the defending State Federation Champions by 14 points in a low-scoring matinee.
In the first of four straight showdowns between boys’ teams, Bishop Loughlin fell to Boys and Girls High School in an all-Brooklyn affair. Thomas Jefferson and Archbishop Molloy battled next, where the latter program was minus five-star junior guard Cole Anthony, who was out with a heel injury.
Anthony’s absence was felt, as Molloy was blown away, 74-45, despite a game-best 24 points from highly touted 7-foot-1 senior Moses Brown.
LuHi’s boys in their second straight day of competition survived a resilient challenge from Archbishop Stepinac, winning by seven, led by LuHi guard and New York Jayhawk standout Frankie Policelli.
Christ the King’s boys team capped off the day by crushing Chaminade, 74-52.
