It’s difficult to find a more accomplished young man than Abrar Hussain.

A senior at Grover Cleveland High School, Hussain’s list of extracurricular activities will make your head spin. He’s on the swimming team, student council, honor society and created the school’s Cricket Club.

He won regional and national bridge building competitions annually. He’s also a New York City lifeguard. Now, you can throw in student representative at the Community Education Council for District 24.

“That’s one of my main goals, to do something for the community,” Hussain said.

Sitting in his first council meeting, the Woodside resident said he was a bit nervous. But he also sees the experience as a way to gain confidence.

Hussain’s family immigrated from Bangladesh in 2012. For a recent immigrant, Hussain’s accomplishments are indicative of his drive and motivation. He said he wants to see more students motivate themselves.

“In Grover Cleveland, there’s a lot of opportunity to do it,” he said. “It’s not just about teachers helping you, it’s about you doing something. That’s why I joined everything.”

Hussain is now in the process of applying for colleges. He said he has his sights on an out-of-state college.

“I don’t want to stay in the city,” he said. “I want to see the world.”

One of his target schools is the University of Michigan, where he plans to study biochemistry. His goal is to eventually become a doctor.

“I don’t know what I’ll end up with,” Hussain said, “but I’ll try my best.”
