These veterans, our heroes, deserve our thanks. So if you see a veteran wearing a Vietnam, WWII or Korean hat, say a big “thank you” to them.
Now that the weather is still warm, shop Jamaica Avenue in the Woodhaven Business Improvement District. As you know, it has been a very difficult economy, especially for our small shopping strips, the last few years. This difficulty is also being felt by the big stores.
It has been stated that the sale of Christmas decorations and cards starts too early. This acceleration, although early, is a result of all of the bigger box stores setting the pace for our little commercial strips.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for our stores and businesses to compete. Although our little Woodhaven offers good prices, two-hour parking, and personalized assistance in a small hometown atmosphere, we still have to compete with every big store and Internet shopping.
This is why the WBID, comprised of local store and business owners, does so much to keep your money here locally. The WBID for the holidays will have holiday lights and music from Dexter Court to 100th Street.
WBID streets will be clean as always and 99 percent graffiti-vandalism free. To give our local businesses a boost, Saturday, November 25, has been designated “Small Business Saturday.” We are encouraging you to “shop small” at our personalized stores, not at the impersonal malls.
So with the holidays fast approaching, the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation and Woodhaven Business Improvement District encourage you to eat out or order in from one of our great Jamaica Avenue restaurants.
Shop locally on November 25 and every day, with all of our restaurants and shopping within walking distance. Save gas and find anything you need on Woodhaven's “Everything Avenue.”
The Jamaica Avenue shopping strip is the backbone of our community, and the fact that we have a Commercial Strip with a strong tax base supports all of Woodhaven.
We are working very hard planning the WBID-sponsored holiday activities. Soon, the holiday lights will be lit and Forest Parkway Plaza will again have a beautiful artificial tree.
It was more then 30 years ago that we planted our award-winning tree that Sandy took down. Let's take care of our special new Woodhaven tree so that it will also last 30 years or more.
Mark your calendars for Friday, December 1, at 6:30 p.m. for the Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony and Saturday, December 2, at noon for the Welcome Santa to Woodhaven Parade.
We will have many groups marching this year. So show up and march with us.
By the way, did you see J-Lo filming in Woodhaven?
Finally our hearts go out to the families in Sutherland Springs, Texas. We grieve with you.
Fly our American flag proudly above all others. May God bless our armed forces, may God bless our leaders, may God bless our disabled veterans, may God bless our NYPD and police officers everywhere, and may God bless America.
