Jamaica-based Zara Realty, which was founded by George Subraj and his brothers, is helping two young women from Guyana achieve their dreams of getting an education.

Over the years, the The George Subraj Family Foundation has conducted medical missions to Guyana, including 25 kidney transplants and 60 cornea transplants. Now, they’re branching into educational initiatives. “George always believed in giving back to the country where he’s from,” said son Tony Subraj “There’s a vast need for support in health and education. Those are the two cornerstones of what he believed in supporting.”

So far six students have received financial support from Zara Realty, with three completing degree programs and going back to Guyana to teach.

“Without the support of a place like Zara, we would not be able to achieve much of what we’re aspiring for,” said Swami Aksharananda, a local leader in the Guyanese community.

The two students that will receiving the partial scholarship from Zara this year are Walica Deokinanan and Bhavani Ramdeo. At York College, Deokinanan plans to study chemistry and Ramdeo will study biology. They will both return to Guyana once they graduate to teach in their home country.
