Jeff Gottlieb of the Central Queens Historical Society was able to identify the politicians in the photo.
There are (starting from the left) Councilman Archie Spigner, unidentified woman, Assemblyman Morton Hillman, Councilman Arthur Katzman, Assemblyman Saul Weprin, Borough President Claire Shulman, unidentified man, Councilman Morton Povman, Assemblywoman Vivian Cook, and Assemblyman Ivan Lafayette.
Well, this week we heard from one of the “unidentified” people in the photo. The woman next to Archie Spigner is Janet Schneider, who served as director of the Queens Museum from 1977 to 1989. Here's some of what she wrote us:
“A friend of mine forwarded the photo you ran on page 6 of the 10/20 edition, as she recognized me as the "unidentified" woman next to Archie Spigner. The photo was taken in 1987 at an event held at the Queens Museum during the exhibition “Art of the Fantastic, Latin America, 1920-1987.”
The "unidentified man" to the right of Claire Shulman is William R. Blake, II, who was in his second term as chairperson of the museum's Board of Trustees. Many knew Bill as the principal of the Blake Insurance Agency on Northern Boulevard.”
Ms. Schneider was also unsure if that was in fact Assemblywoman Cook:
“As the picture was taken in 1987 and Assemblywoman Cook was not yet elected, I am less than certain about her ID. It might be Juanita Watkins, who was active with the museum at the time.
Or perhaps Ms. Cook was working with one of the others pictured.
Thanks for running the picture. It was fun to see it again after all this time.”
Thanks for getting in touch with us!
