Our Woodhaven Business Improvement District from Dexter Court to 100th Street is thriving with many new stores and businesses. We now have a new clothing store, a small restaurant, a pharmacy, two grocery stores, a hair salon, a bakery, a computer store and a big new supermarket. Our WBID now has six supermarkets.

Visit these new locations this weekend at Woodhaven's big event, the 36th Annual Wonderful Woodhaven Street Festival on Sunday, October 16, from noon to 6 p.m. on Jamaica Avenue from 80th Street to Woodhaven Boulevard.

We will have rides and games, antique cars and a variety of vendors with unique products, as well as our great Woodhaven stores with plenty of bargains.

The entertainment for the festival will include country-and-western music from The Mary Lamont Band, and rock from Solid State Band, Plastic Soul and Minefield Playground.

The special feature will be The Malaysian Lion Dancers of Lunar New Year celebration fame. A late addition is Shorinjiryou Karate, which has been with us since our first street festival.

Come by the GWDC/WBID table in front of 84-01 Jamaica Avenue, where we will be distributing free American flags, flag pins and other giveaways. Also purchase an original Woodhaven Flag for $12, or the beautiful picture of a carousel horse, “The Forest Park Beauty,” painted by Constance Del Vecchio Maltese for $7.

Please have some good thoughts for sun on Sunday.

Do you have a vacant house near you that is in disrepair with overgrown yards that is possibly accessible to homeless derelicts? This is a "zombie house," please report the address to the Attorney General's Office at (800) 788-9898. Also, they assist with foreclosures.

I have noted many American flags flying throughout our Woodhaven community, please add your house to one of those that are proudly flying American flags above all others. See you on Sunday.

May God bless our armed forces, may God bless our disabled veterans, may God bless our NYPD and all of our police officers everywhere, and may God bless our America.
