Hurricane Matthew is in the Caribbean this week, and it is not known yet if it will be coming to our coast, but we hope not. Watch for updates on this storm.

The collapsed building at 78-19 Jamaica Avenue still has barricades, which the WBID has had constantly painted. It's been more than three years, how long will this repair take? Or is it just a stall so that the owner can drag his feet for another three years?

Tear it down and build senior housing and a senior center for our elderly who want to stay in Woodhaven.

On Saturdays, October 8 and 15, there will be a Lego Hour at 3 p.m. for ages six and up at the Woodhaven Library. Call (718) 849-1010 for information on more programs.

As I stated in my previous article, we had a surprise guest at our last Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation meeting, Public Advocate Letitia James, the first in line to succeed the mayor.

Congratulations to NYPD Captain Kenneth Aube, now a deputy inspector, son of Jean Aube, a hometown boy of Woodhaven. You make us proud!

The WBID from Dexter Court to 100th Street is getting brighter thanks to new LED lighting funded by Councilman Eric Ulrich and Borough President Melinda Katz. They installation has started. Look on Woodhaven Boulevard, you will see them and they are great.

Come out to the biggest and best family street festival in Queens on Sunday, October 16, from noon to 6 p.m. on Jamaica Avenue from 80th Street to Woodhaven Boulevard. Please have some good thoughts for sun.

We will have rides and games, antique cars and a variety of vendors and our great Woodhaven stores with bargains. The entertainment will be The Mary Lamont Band, and from Woodhaven Solid State Band, Plastic Soul and Mindfield Playground.

This year again the special feature will be The Malaysian Lion Dancers of Lunar New Year celebration fame, as well as some surprise entertainers.

Come by the GWDC/WBID table in front of 84-01 Jamaica Avenue, where we will be distributing free American flags, flag pins and other giveaways. Also purchase an original Woodhaven Flag for $12, or the beautiful picture of a Carousel horse, “The Forest Park Beauty,” painted by Constance Del Vecchio Maltese for $7.

I have noted many American flags being flown throughout our Woodhaven community, please add your house to one of those proudly flying American flags.

May God bless our leaders, may God bless our armed forces, may God bless our disabled veterans, may God bless the NYPD and all of our police officers, and may God bless our America.
