I hope that we can enjoy beautiful weather for Mother's Day on Sunday and the week before so you can have the opportunity to shop for mom on Jamaica Avenue.

Yes, in Woodhaven all of our stores and businesses and other neighborhood amenities are within walking distance, which is especially good for our older shoppers for it keeps them independent and our families can always "run down to the avenue" to pick up something.

So here's to our beloved mothers, have a great day and enjoy your gifts from our WBID.

The WBID cleans our streets, bags the garbage, cleans the graffiti and sponsors many community events along Jamaica Avenue. One of these events, with the support of the GWDC, is the "Small Town" Annual Memorial Day Observance on Thursday, May 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Forest Parkway Plaza at Forest Parkway and Jamaica Avenue.

We will place a new wreath to honor and remember those men of Woodhaven that sacrificed their lives for their country and our freedom.

On Saturday, May 7, from 2 to 6 p.m., join us for a rally to landmark Neir's Tavern. This rally will take place in front of the tavern at 87-48 78th Street. Now that Pop's Restaurant has been destroyed, let us be vigilant in safeguarding our other local treasures.

Please go to our Facebook page and see scenes of Pop's since 1910. So let's show up and keep Neir's for posterity.

If you like good music, attend the Goodfellas tribute to Billy Dawn on Sunday, May 15, at Woodhaven Manor from noon to 4 p.m. A full buffet and show is only $45. More than 15 groups will be appearing.

Encourage storeowners to secure a free sleep-proof bench for the front of their store, like the one in front of DII Department Store at 80-19 Jamaica Avenue. Call our office for more information.

Last but not least, our "Spring Into Woodhaven" GWDC Dinner Dance fundraiser on Friday, June 10, from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Woodhaven Manor at 96-01 Jamaica Avenue. Please attend and applaud our honorees and enjoy the Social Event of the Year. The ticket donation is only $65. Please call our office for reservations.

The City Council is proposing a five-cent per plastic bag charge. This is just another tax, especially on poorer New Yorkers with large families. This charge will be a great hardship to shoppers. Why not set up bins so that these plastic bags can be returned to the stores and recycled?

There will be two new pet shelters built in the Bronx and Queens. This would be a great time to build these as "no-kill" shelters and start the conversion of the other three shelters already in Brooklyn, Staten Island and Manhattan.

We welcome these two shelters, but why do we have to build two new shelters involving high-paid consultants? I'm sure there are vacant well-built buildings in Queens and the Bronx that can be renovated. This would also bring these shelters on line sooner.

Remember, if it takes two more years that means many more animals will suffer and not be helped.

I hope that our Greek neighbors and friends enjoyed a joyous Greek Orthodox Easter.

Remember fly your American flags proudly above all others and with respect. May God bless our armed forces, may God bless our disabled veterans, may God bless our NYPD and may God bless our America.
