I hope that you had a blessed warm Thanksgiving with your loving family and guests. It was a cold day, but the air is filled with happiness when we gave thanks for all we have. Now we enter Hanukah, Christmas and New Year and the WBID-sponsored Woodhaven’s Holiday Weekend.
I hope that you are shopping locally, as on this past Small Business Saturday, and I hope you rode our free Jamaica Avenue trolley. It is so important that you buy your gifts, gift certificates and party clothes in our Woodhaven stores and that you use our businesses all year long.
If it wasn’t for our small businesses on our “Everything Avenue” from Dexter Court to 100th Street, we would not have a strong tax base, employers for our residents and all of the amenities that our WBID affords us. Please keep your money in our community and shop Woodhaven.
The GWDC also has gifts for your consideration. We have an original miniature Woodhaven flag, suitable for window display. Also, a gift of the recognition of the GWDC’s accomplishment in the landmarking of our Forest Park Carousel, “The Jewel of Forest Park.”
This gift being given to us by the noted and accomplished artist Constance Del Vecchio Maltese, who has contributed to us replicas of her painting of a beautiful carousel horse, “Forest Park Beauty.”
These two unique Woodhaven gifts can be given to relatives or friends and those that are now living out of state. They are priced at $12 for the Woodhaven flag and $7 for the replica of the painting. Please call (718) 805-0202 to order either of these perfect gifts, which are a part of Woodhaven memories.
Our WBID is completing the holiday decorations in our Forest Parkway Plaza, with many twinkling lights on our beautiful artificial Christmas tree. If you haven’t noticed, we have a newly planted Christmas tree. It is a Blue Spruce, eight feet tall and very symmetrical. This one hopefully will last 27 years.
Our holiday lights along our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue are lit and festive, and the holiday music fills the air. Again, please shop locally and give support to those small stores that are so generous and support us by contributing to our WBID for your family’s enjoyment.
Our WBID-sponsored holidays in Woodhaven weekend will arrive this Friday, December 5, at 6:30 p.m. with the Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony at Forest Parkway Plaza off Jamaica Avenue.
On Saturday, December 6, the Welcome Santa to Woodhaven Parade kicks off at noon at 100th Street, marching down Jamaica Avenue to Dexter Court. Please join us in marching with Santa and Mrs. Claus, who will greet the young children and those young at heart.
After this weekend, the Woodhaven Business Improvement District will take free pictures with Santa Claus and friends at Forest Parkway Plaza on Saturday, December 13. On December 14, we will have a free trolley along our avenue for your shopping convenience from noon to 5 p.m., and on December 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. the WBID will again take free pictures with Santa and friends.
The owner of the collapsed building at 78-19 Jamaica Avenue is still trying to rebuild it. Keep watching them, and advise the WBID of any major changes there.
The Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation is in the process of preparing a new wreath for our Word War II Monument. Also, the 102nd Precinct is hot on the heels of the two that stole our wreath.
May God bless our veterans who have preserved our freedom and may God bless our armed forces. Fly our American flag proudly above all others in their honor. May God bless our America.
