This last week has been cold with fog and drizzle as we reach the end of November. Maybe we will have a mild winter. We can only hope.

Whatever the weather, please keep shopping Jamaica Avenue. As you know, it has been a very difficult economy, especially for our small shopping strips, the last few years. This difficulty is also being felt by the big stores.

It has been said that Christmas decorations have been placed out too early. This acceleration is a result of all of the bigger box stores setting the pace for our little commercial strips. It is becoming increasingly difficult for our stores and businesses to compete.

Although our little Woodhaven offers good prices, two-hour parking and personalized assistance in a small-town atmosphere, we still have to compete with every big store and online shopping.

This is why your WBID, comprised of your store and business owners, does so much to keep your money here locally. Your WBID for the holidays will have lights from Dexter Court to 100th Street and holiday music. Our WBID streets will be clean as always and 99 percent graffiti free with WBID security all along our avenue.

To give our local shopping a boost, Saturday, November 24, has been designated “Small Business Saturday,” and we are encouraging you to “shop small.” So with the holidays fast approaching, next Saturday the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation and WBID encourage you to eat out or order in from one of our great Jamaica Avenue restaurants.

So save gas and find everything you need on your Everything Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue. Also on Saturday, ride our free trolley from noon to 5 p.m. along the avenue from Dexter Court to 100th Street for your shopping convenience.

Remember to slow down to 25 mph in the city, unless marked otherwise.

We are working very hard planning our WBID-sponsored holiday activities. Our Forest Parkway Plaza will again have the beautiful artificial tree that we had last year. Looking back, it was more then 27 years ago that we planted our award-winning tree, so let us take care and plant our tree next year so that it will also last 27 years or more.

Mark your calendars for Friday, December 5, at 6:30 p.m. for the Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony and Saturday, December 6, at noon for the Welcome Santa to Woodhaven Parade. We will have many groups marching this year, including the WRBA. So show up and march with us.

Now to a miserable unnecessary incident that occurred over the weekend, which sadly makes us realize that there are some very mean-spirited despicable people in our midst. Two people stole the wreath and the two American flags that we placed on our WWII Monument on Memorial Day. This monument is dedicated to Woodhaven residents that sacrificed their lives during that war.

Every year, the GWDC places a wreath in honor of these brave heroes, and it stays there throughout the year untouched. But these individuals who took it not only dishonored our Woodhaven heroes, but our America. The GWDC will get another wreath, but just know that this was an act against our residents, our community and America. Little do they know they were caught on a surveillance camera.

Fly our American flag proudly above all others. May God bless our armed forces, may God bless our leaders, may God bless our disabled veterans, and may God bless America.
