Maria Thomson, the longtime executive director of the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation and Woodhaven Business Improvement District, has passed away.

Thomson also served at various times as president of the Woodhaven Residents' Block Association and 102nd Precinct Community Council, as well as a columnist for the Leader/Observer, where she often wrote about the history of both the GWDC and the WBID.

She was also instrumental in advocating for the 2013 landmarking of the Forest Park Carousel, saving Engine Company 294, and organizing the annual Wonderful Woodhaven Street Festival and annual holiday events along Jamaica Avenue.

Thomson was also a decades-long member of Community Board 9.

"Maria Thomson leaves behind a legion of family, friends and supporters who have directly benefited from her efforts in protecting the quality of life in Woodhaven,” said State Senator Joseph Addabbo upon learning of her death. “I was blessed to have worked with Maria for over 25 years and to have called her a friend. She truly has made an everlasting imprint on the community."

Visitation and funeral services have not been announced.

Maria will be greatly missed - her warmth, energy, friendship and commitment to community. She is in a class of her own. A very dear and special lady.

Incredibly sad day for Woodhaven, Queens and New York City. A true legend will be missed deeply.
