There’s a brand new store in Maspeth selling grand old stuff. Sand’s Antiques at 71-03 Grand Avenue is stocked with one-of-a-kind items reminiscent of an earlier era. The store has an assortment of things like oil lamps, wood furniture and jewelry, with new items added every week.

Store manager Sandy Wang said her family was forced to close their antique store because of exorbitant rent prices, among other reasons. Maspeth seemed like the perfect place to start over.

“I was driving around with my friend and we saw that people put out a lot of decorations. I think the people in this neighborhood are very traditional,” said Wang. “It’s a good and safe neighborhood.”

Wang said the store has only been open two months, yet despite the recession, business has not been too bad; she sells something everyday.

“When you start this kind of business, I don’t wish to make money; I wish to make people happy,” said Wang. She added, “Even though I just opened, I already have regular customers.”

She estimated that 80 percent of customers are women, 20 percent men. The latter generally buy larger items like chairs, tables, and sculptures, but women are all about the antique jewelry. And it’s not only older women who are interested, either.

“Even students come in here to buy stuff, like necklaces for their friends’ birthdays,” said Wang. “I give students good prices because I know they don’t have a lot of money.”

She added that Sand’s Antiques offers items for all price points, starting as low as $2, and for people of all tastes.

“A lot of reasons make you buy antiques. Some people buy things because they’re cute. Some people buy for style. Some people buy for quality. My reason is I like to mix the styles,” said Wang. “People will say ‘that’s interesting.’ I think antiques are very beautiful but also classic. Mostly everyone wants to have some antiques in their houses.”
