Respect is earned

Dear Editor,

I remember a little know Amendment, the first one, that gives people the freedom of speech. Mr. Robert DeNiro may have offended the delicate ears of both Mr. John Amato and Mr. Frederick R. Bedell, Jr., but not the audience at the Tony Awards ceremony.

But I would say that respect is earned and not given, and the president does not get automatic respect for being in that sacred office.

Daily, through his comments on Twitter and through his surrogates on television, his disrespect for the people who do not show 100 percent agreement with his thoughts, acts and deeds tell me that he does not deserve respect.

He has yet to bring this divided country together. His ego does not allow him to, so I respectfully disagree with you both. Let's pray we get through this time unscathed as a country.
