Dear Editor,

Last year was one of many changes, but one thing that hasn't changed is

a blighted block in Kew Gardens Hills that has remained an empty hole for the past three years with no progress in site.

Fire destroyed 14 stores on Vleigh Place between 77th Road and 78th Avenue on December 30, 2016.

A pizzeria, bakery, barber shop and delicatessen were among the businesses lost. The Department of Buildings (DOB) condemned the site the next day and is scheduled for demolition in January 2017.

But demolition was delayed until September of that same year and finally completed in March 2018. The site became a block-long concrete pit filled with dirt, enclosed by a wooden fence.

It stayed that way until July of 2018 when VP Capital Holdings purchased the property for $6.5 million and filed plans with DOB in October to build a four-story, mixed-use structure with 18 residential units and a strip mall.

Construction work by contractor Cassone began in early 2019, but suddenly halted in October with no explanation.

Even though this is a private project, it has a public impact. Residents miss their stores and want them back.

Our elected official should investigate and let us know what’s happening, it’s their job.
