With respect to any bills that would legalize recreational marijuana similar to alcohol with state regulation and sales taxes, I believe is the most stupid policy ever proposed in light of the damning evidence against two other legalized substances: tobacco and alcohol.
Although regulated, they are responsible for many diseases, deaths, and social costs to society. Specifically, recreational use of marijuana has been shown to have serious medical and psychological effects, and no sane legislator would be so oblivious to the facts just to generate tax revenue.
Pointedly to the issue of safe driving, it should be emphasized that acute use of marijuana impairs the ability to perform complex psychomotor functions. Driving while intoxicated with marijuana is actually more dangerous than drunk driving, since one may deceptively feel capable of driving yet impaired in motor functions for four to eight hours beyond the time of subjective effects of the drug.
Since the effects of marijuana are additive with those of alcohol, such a cocktail is a prescription for disability and death, since many marijuana users drink alcohol while smoking pot.
And what shall the state do with the extra tax revenue? Well, a portion of the tax revenue would go into substance-abuse programs. It is absolutely illogical to be legalizing a drug, and concomitantly apportioning the taxes thereof to drug treatment programs.
Let's put the kibosh on any recreational pot plans immediately or face another epidemic of disease, disability and death on and off the roads.
