Astoria is already home to a number of mothers who raise their children holistically and naturally, and now it is the location of the newest chapter of the Holistic Moms Network, a national organization that provides support and assistance for parents raising their children in a holistic manner.

The new chapter, which was started by five Astoria mothers who share the common goal of creating and maintaining a holistic household, is the first chapter in Queens and, after their first meeting last Wednesday, is already more than 60 members strong.

“The Holistic Moms Network, which is also for dads, kids, and the whole family, is a way to provide support and resources that will assist in holistic parenting,” said Maria Delgado, one of the five Astoria mothers who reached out to the national organization and founded the local chapter.

She described the holistic parenting methods espoused by the group as a “way to nurture your child through co-parenting, eating organic, using holistic and alternative medicines, living green, and being proactive in the environment. It’s about being in balance, mind, body and spirit.”

The Astoria Chapter of the Holistic Moms Network will hold monthly meetings for parents that will bring together the like-minded stroller-pushers to discuss parenting ideas, strategies, and create a close-knit community of holistic families.

“We want to provide support in a non-judgmental environment for new parents,” said Delgado.

The meetings will also feature guest speakers, brought in from the four corners of the East Coast, who will discuss a variety of holistic topics, from raising organic produce at home to homeopathic medical treatments. The workshops may be for parents, but the group provides children’s programming that is in tune with the month’s adult topic, giving the youngsters a chance to participate in the discussion at their own level.

“When parents are informed, they make better choices,” added Delgado.

The mothers who helped create the Astoria chapter couldn’t be more excited about meeting other holistic-minded families, and if they can help spread the word about the movement at the same time, they think that it’s even better.

“With so many parents calling Queens home, it’s the perfect time to start a chapter of Holistic Moms here in Astoria,” said Delgado. “It’s about being proud of our borough and showing parents that we are welcoming.”

I am very happy to see that HMN has come to Queens. Its a great organization. As a Holistic practitioner, I have participated in some of their activities with the group in Long Island and was very impressed with what I saw. Thank you Maria Delgado for your initiative!
