Old problem

Dear Editor,

The hit-and-run death of a nine-year-old boy in Jackson Heights on raises two disturbing questions.

Why did driver Juan Jimenez flee the scene? And what was an 86-year-old man doing behind the wheel in the first place?

Seniors have a high auto accident rate due to physical problems. Reflexes, coordination, vision, hearing and motor skills decline as you age.

New York drivers must take a vision test to renew their licenses, but that's not enough. All drivers 70 and older should be required to pass a road test at least

every two years.

That's not age discrimination, it's common sense and vital for public safety. Those who fail won't suffer.

I'm 78 years old and haven't driven in the past 46 years because I don't have to. I can get anywhere I need to go by walking or using mass transit. So can most older New Yorkers.

Sincerely,

Richard Reif
