The eatery specializes in Neapolitan-style pizza cooked in a brick oven with a recipe that has been handed down for five generations.
“We have a close family friend who lives nearby in Forest Hills, and he told us we should come check out this available location,” said co-owner Gianmarco Di Michele. “In the city there’s a lot of competition, but in this neighborhood there doesn’t seem to be many pizza places, so it was a good option for us.”
Numero 28 Pizzeria is scheduled to open sometime early next year at 107-12 70th Road in the area known as “Restaurant Row.” Di Michele does not want to promise an opening date because they’re making minor changes to the space and are waiting on a permit for their oven.
Numero 28 Pizzeria offers more than 30 varieties of pies in three sizes, including a 14-inch round personal pizza, an 18-inch rectangle that serves two, and a 29-inch rectangle that can feed up to four people.
Originally opened in Manhattan, the eatery has expanded to nine sites, including locations in London, the West Village and the Upper East Side, as well as Bergen Street and Park Slope in Brooklyn.
It’s known for being a destination spot for celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Seinfeld, and soccer star David Villa.
While their downtown location is more of a pizzeria and their uptown location is more of a sit-down restaurant, Di Michele said the Forest Hills location will be a combination of the two.
Numero 28 Pizzeria will also serve classic Italian pasta dishes, as well as have a brunch menu.
It will open in a space once occupied by The Grill Mediterranean Restaurant which closed in December. The Grill was one of the restaurants slated for demolition last year in place of a 12-story mixed use building, but developers decided to scrap their plan following community outcry.
In a Facebook post on the Forest Hills NYC group, The Grill’s owner Oleg Kaz stated that “Forest Hills needs a good Italian restaurant with brick-oven pizza.”
