No plea bargains

Dear Editor,

Officer Randolph Holder is the fourth cop to die from gun violence in one year. Their deaths result from the flow of weapons from firearms-friendly states into our city and a plea-bargaining process that allows violent career criminals to hit the streets instead of doing hard time.

"Alleged" cop killer Tryone Howard is a perfect example of the latter. He served 12 prison terms and was arrested last year, but later released in a "diversion" program that threatens our safety. Plea bargaining is a fast way for overworked

prosecutors and public defenders to ease their workloads.

More than 90 percent of all state and federal cases are settled that way. Let's

end this now, starting with all gun crimes, especially murder. All five of the city's District Attorney's offices must stop offering plea deals and demand

trials for anyone charged with gun violence.

Tell prosecutors to do their jobs and seek full punishment of firearms felons.
