To show support for the cause, several New York sports stars made appearances and signed memorabilia, including Stanley Cup champions Brian Leetch, Adam Graves, and Mike Richter; Yankees alum David Cone; championship fighters Mark Breland and Iran Barkley; and two-time Superbowl champion Sean Landeta.
To accommodate the overwhelming crowd, 53rd Drive was closed off and a heated tent was erected in front of O’Neill’s. Inside the tent, fans vied for prized photos, signed gear and other items including a signed Beatles guitar through a silent auction while more raucous bidding went on further inside.
“We were worried the tent would be too big, but it was packed in there,” said one of the event’s coordinators. “It all started with Brian Leetch, Mr. O’Neill’s son-in-law. When you say Brian will headline this roster of athletes, you get a tremendous following.”
Manhattan Beer Distributors donated $25,000 to St. Jude’s as part of the event. In addition, they donated all the beer and other beverages.
Also instrumental in hosting the event was Eagel Sports Promotions, who was able to coordinate for several sports stars to attend.
Live music was provided by the Dr. JIN Band, lead by local native TJ Fox, and the famed John Amirante sang “God Bless America,” bringing a bit of Madison Square Garden to Maspeth.
