For the past two years, student photography from MS226 in South Ozone Park has adorned the walls of JFK Airport's Terminal 4 through a partnership between the school and JFK IAT, the terminal's management company.

Last week, JFK IAT furthered that partnership by donating ten new Canon Rebel T6 cameras to the school to be used by seventh and eighth-grade photography students.

CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff remembers when Principal Rushell White first approached him about working with the photography club.

“What we created together was a fantastic exhibition,” he explained. “Because it was up for about a year, at least 10 million people saw those pictures.”

This year's exhibition featured photos of New York City and it's iconic places and landmarks. Since Terminal 4 is an international terminal, de Graaff said often the first thing people see upon arriving in New York City are the student's images.

De Graaff said they have received incredible feedback from the terminal's travelers.

“Make sure you bring us another exhibition next year,” he told the students.

Jeffrey Gamble recalled when he was asked to teach the elective, the school didn't own any cameras, but he says they didn't lose focus, eventually finding cameras for the students.

“You have to have the attitude that you're always going to succeed,” Gamble said. “If you don't have it, we may not have made it happen.”
