Since the firing of Ben McAdoo, the Giants have been on the lookout for their next head coach.

We’ve heard the names and the usual suspects: Josh McDaniels, Pat Schurmur, Jim Schwartz, Steve Wilks.

It would be easy to find pluses and minuses with all four of these candidates, and it is quite possible one of the four could end up becoming the next Giants head coach.

However, before the Giants decide to hire anyone, they need to investigate the current situation with the New England Patriots.

The Patriots? The most stable organization in the NFL over the last 17 years, the gold standard of the NFL? What is there to investigate?

The Giants need to see if there is any possibility that they could bring one of the greatest coaches of all time back to complete his career arc in a place that is near and dear to his heart.

Yes, you read that properly, the Giants need to look into what exactly is going on with Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

Friday’s bombshell report released by ESPN suggested a serious rift between Bill Belichick and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, with team owner Robert Kraft trying to do his very best to play peacemaker.

The report said the potential fracture in the relationship is due to a variety of factors.

First, the Patriots became very unhappy with Tom Brady’s personal trainer Alex Guerrero and his growing influence within the organization.

The Patriots relieved Guerrero of his team privileges in mid-November.

In addition to the Guerrero situation, Belichick was not in favor of trading away Brady protégé Jimmy Garropolo, who appears destined for stardom with the way he played down the stretch in San Francisco.

The report suggests the trade was a necessity to keep the 40-year-old Brady happy, something that clearly did not sit well with the cutthroat, win-at-all-costs Belichick.

So how accurate is this ESPN report? Nobody has a specific answer, but I would argue that when there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Is it a given that Bill Belichick is about to leave the New England Patriots? Absolutely not.

That said, if you are the Giants coming off the worst season in franchise history, you wouldn’t explore the situation?

You would be crazy not to.

He is the best head coach in the NFL over the last 30 years, and he has ties to the Giants organization from the 1980’s.

If you are Giants ownership, make some calls, ask around. Figure out how real the possibility of Belichick leaving New England truly is.

Even if it’s a pipe dream, for one of the greatest coaches of all time it is absolutely worth pursuing.

It’s a long shot, but for a coach of that magnitude, you would be foolish not to monitor the situation.

Imagine a Giants cut-off hoodie patrolling the sideline for the good guys at MetLife Stadium? It seems too good to be true.

If you’re a Giants fan, you hope it becomes reality.
