It's November already, the cold weather is coming, and as of a few days ago my spring jacket has been officially retired, probably long after most people already went through their closets for the heavier jackets.

Since I only write once a month, many events inevitably happen between columns. November 6 was Election Day, and I hope you voted. Congratulations to all of our winning candidates.

October was a busy month for all of Woodhaven. The co-naming of “Maria Thomson Way” took place on October 10. It was a beautiful ceremony and a much deserved honor for my late boss.

Her husband Bob, daughter Alena and many of her relatives were there to watch the unveiling. It was an honor for me to be there, and now as I walk by the intersection of Forest Parkway and Jamaica Avenue I pause to remember Maria.

I also attended the Woodhaven Residents' Block Association Dinner Dance. Along with the other honorees, Maria Thomson was inducted in the WRBA Hall of Fame.

I sat beside her husband Bob and Maureen, who worked with Maria for even more years than I did. If you got a chance to attend either of these events, they were both beautiful and two occasions that I will never forget.

Another highlight of October was new LED lights on Jamaica Avenue. This project was funded through the Department of Transportation, and a big thanks to Councilman Eric Ulrich for his part in making it happen.

Maria worked on this project for a long time, and although she did not live to see her hard work come to fruition, I'm sure she knows Jamaica Avenue got it done.

The Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation will be holding its first-ever “Woodhaven Winnings” fundraising event. The GWDC will be giving out gift certificates donated from stores and businesses on Jamaica Avenue, and the price of admission will guarantee you win a gift certificate valued between $10 and $40.

As you walk in the door you will pick an envelope at random, and that will be your prize. In addition, you can spin the wheel for more freebies throughout the evening. Tickets are only $25 and also include food and wine.

A portion of these proceeds will be used to buy toys for needy children during the holidays, along with ten baskets of food that will be given to families in the area. We will only sell 75 tickets to this event, so get yours before they sell out.

Support a local worthy cause, enjoy food and raffles, and spend a night out with your friends and neighbors. The event will be held on Thursday, December 6, at Woodhaven Manor, 96-01 Jamaica Avenue, from 7 to 9 p.m. Call (718) 805-0202 for more information.

And since I won't write again until December, I hope you had a nice Veterans Day and have a very Happy Thanksgiving! See you next month.
