On Friday, June 12, from 5 to 9 p.m., the Forest Park Carousel will host the School Sisters of Notre Dame for a charity event to benefit the Sisters' educational center for women.
On this evening, all proceeds from our historical carousel - $3 per ride and a special rate of $10 for unlimited rides – will go to support the Sisters.
There will be magic as Omar the Ollusionist will thrill the crowd, and a face painter will be there to decorate the kids. It’s a terrific opportunity to ride the carousel deep into the night in the middle of beautiful Forest Park. Parking is free and just steps away from this beautiful New York City landmark.
The School Sisters of Notre Dame’s Educational Center provides opportunities for women at a price that is so extremely affordable that it’s practically nothing. For some women, learning how to speak English at the center located on 88th Avenue across from St. Thomas the Apostle opens up a world of opportunities and possibilities for them and their families.
For other women, the center helps them prepare for the TASC, or what the High School Equivalency exam is known as these days. It’s a difficult test; if you have an opportunity to see one sometime you’ll be surprised at how hard it is.
With the help of the School Sisters of Notre Dame many women, a great majority of them right here in Woodhaven, have passed and gotten new or better jobs.
By improving the lives of these women, the Sisters improve the lives of their children, giving them the best opportunity for a bright future. Their work has the sort of deep impact on our community that will be felt here in Woodhaven for many years and decades.
In the last ten years, nearly 1,000 women have walked through the doors of the center and walked out being able to better communicate with their neighbors or with the opportunity to go out and get a better job. In some cases, women have come for the English classes and stayed for the high school classes.
Recently, the Sisters have been facing some budget woes and found themselves in need of some help, and that’s where our friends at the Forest Park Carousel stepped in. David Galst, operations manager of the Forest Park Carousel, was only too happy to reach out with a helping hand.
“I really admire the fantastic work that the Sisters do, and I’m very excited to help them and all of the women who take classes at the center,” he said. “We truly appreciate the opportunity to give something back to the communities that support us and have made us feel so welcome.”
Sister Catherine Feeney, executive director of SSNDEC, says that the students are extremely grateful to the Forest Park Carousel for offering to help their efforts. “Many of our ladies take their kids to the carousel regularly,” she said. “This gift – and that’s what it is, a gift – shows that the people running the carousel have tremendous heart and truly love our community.”

It’s wonderful to see two great groups of people coming together for such a good cause. All the ingredients are there for a terrific evening on Friday, June 12. All we need now is for you and your friends and family to come out and show your support. We hope to see you there!
