Time really flies. I can not believe it is already time for my monthly article.

May has been a very busy time for our office and Woodhaven. First, we had the Memorial Day Remembrance on Thursday May 24. It was a very special event to honor all the veterans who have sacrificed their lives for our country.

As it is every year, the event was held at Forest Parkway Plaza. State Senator Joseph Addabbo, Assemblyman Michael Miller, members of American Legion Post 118, and the Franklin K. Lane ROTC Color Guard under the leadership of Sergeant Carr honored the veterans that were there that evening.

The next big event was on June 1. The GWDC Dinner Dance this year honored my former boss, Maria A. Thomson. This was a bittersweet event.

It was truly a special evening as those that gathered at the Woodhaven Manor remembered Maria, and that the dance was one of her favorite times of the year. Although there was a big crowd, this year still felt empty.

A remarkable slideshow highlighting Maria through the years was shown on the big screen. Nicholas Theodorou prepared this video as a special tribute to his former boss and a remembrance for Bob Thomson. I can't say enough about this slideshow, you just had to see it. Maria's presence was definitely with us that night.

Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez spoke of Maria, and she also presented Bob Thomson with a special recognition, stating that Maria will be forever in the Congressional records.

Velazquez called her the unofficial Mayor of Woodhaven, which many of us already knew. It was truly something Maria would have loved.

After the dancing, a special one-of-a-kind "Woodhavenopoly" game, created by Maria and the GWDC in the 80s, was raffled off. It was truly fitting that Bob Thomson won this prize. What a way to end the night.

I hope that as the new executive director I made Maria proud.

Remember last month I wrote about the new eatery Mama's Empanadas? Well, it is officially open and they certainly looked busy. And don't forget Make Music new York will take place on June 21 at Forest Parkway Plaza from 6 to 8 p.m. featuring the band Plastic Soul.

And although it is still a bit away, the Wonderful Woodhaven Street Festival 2018 is scheduled for September 30. See you next month!
